Therapy doesn’t change your circumstances or replace a loss, or find employment, or change the custody agreement. So why does it work?
The answer is simple; it balances our perspective and restores our ability to see things in a different way. We feel more in control, more grounded, more competent to face the world when we are able to consider other ways that we can overcome our barriers.
What can we expect in the first counseling session?
Because you’ve already taken some time to share your story on the phone, you can be assured that your therapist will be a good fit. You’ve also done all the paperwork online, so you’re good to go. During the first session you and your therapist can jump right in. He or she will go over some of the nuts and bolts of therapy, like confidentiality, the financial stuff, and scheduling, and then you’ll both talk more about how you and you family would like to use counseling to help your family get along better. You might also be surprised to find that therapy can include a lot of laughing - life can be totally absurd and wonderful and terrible all at once - finding the humor in your predicament can be super healing. You'll leave that first session with some new thoughts to ponder, and maybe even a little homework if that's your thing.
How long will we be in therapy?
The answer is, it depends! Starting with your phone consultation, before you ever come into the office, we work on creating clear, measurable therapy goals so you know whether you're making progress. You and your therapist will meet weekly until your goals are met. Most people don't come to counseling right away, and our hope is to help you feel better and less overwhelmed ASAP. If you feel stuck, you and your therapist will work together to try a different approach. If you feel like you've met your initial goals and want to create new ones, you can do that too! And if there is ever a time we agree that your therapist is not the best person to help you, we’ll help you get connected to someone who is.
What if we can't attend every week?
We have found that working together every week results in more efficient progress, and one of our goals for you is that you and your family get what you need from counseling and move on with your awesome life! That said, sometimes life gets in the way of therapy - if you need to cut back on sessions or take a break, you and your therapist will work together to create a schedule that will work best for you. We also use a HIPAA-compliant teletherapy platform and some clients love the ease of attending online counseling online from their homes.
Do you prescribe medication?
We don’t prescribe meds, but we can help you get connected with prescribers in the area. If you and your therapist agree it would be helpful, your therapist will be happy to work together with your medical providers to help create a holistic network of healers all focused on helping you and your family members feel like your most spectacular self.
Do you see couples or families?
Yes, we do! In fact we think that working with the whole family is an incredibly powerful way to help people, and can have a measurable positive effect on families and generations for years to come.
